As first entrances in college go, stomping on shirtless in a balaclava while brandishing a scythe and a newly minted Irish accent isn’t a bad one. Brian Friel’s Translations glimpses life in a small 19th Century Irish town facing the impending encroachment of English presence and, more severely, language.
For me, Translations marked my first performance in college with the Barnard Theatre Department at Columbia University. At a time of major transition in my own life, it was a comfort and a joy to dive into the physical and vocal work of the production as we tried to bring Ireland to life through accent and expression.
